Your dog is your best friend, but you cannot always bring them everywhere you go. At Playful Pack, our dog boarding facilities are designed to be your dog’s home away from home. We offer all the comforts you could want when your furry family member needs to visit us.

Many dog owners are understandably worried about their dogs’ first big trip away from home. You might fear that your dog will feel lost or homesick or that they will be bored or scared. At Playful Pack dog boarding services, we understand. We have made the boarding process as simple and comfortable as possible for both you and your pup. Here is what you need to know to get your dog ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

1. Get ready …

Before your dog can visit a doggy daycare or boarding facility, they need to be fully current on all vaccines. Schedule a checkup at the vet clinic at least two weeks before your scheduled departure to make sure your dog is healthy and has all required vaccines, including bordetella, distemper and rabies. You will also need to ensure your dog’s tags and microchip are updated with all current contact information, such as your phone number and email address.

2. Get set …

Daycare can give your dog a chance to get to know us here at Playful Pack. When your dog visits doggy daycare, they will get to meet caretakers and other dogs. They will spend time indoors playing, engaging with new friends, and having fun. Your dog will learn that Playful Pack is a fun, exciting place to visit. Just as important, your pup will realize that you will return at the end of the visit, and both of you will go back home. This builds confidence and security for later visits and longer stays at our boarding facility.

If your dog is an only pup, consider adding some socialization practice to your regular routine. At Playful Pack dog boarding in Fairfax Station, your dog will have lots of opportunities to socialize, but you can also take your dog on walks or to the dog park to practice both socialization and good doggy manners.

3. Go!

On the big day, you might be a little anxious, but your mood can color your pup’s perception of events. Keep things calm and relaxed as much as possible. Try to give your dog plenty of exercise before dropping your dog off, and avoid feeding a large or heavy meal, which could result in stomach upsets. Pack a bag with your dog’s essentials, including:

  • Meals for each day
  • Any necessary medications or supplements
  • Favorite treats, toys, or blankets
  • A leash, collar, and ID tags

When it’s time to leave, say your goodbyes quickly to avoid overstimulating your pup and leaving them feeling stressed, anxious, or fearful. Remember, your dog takes cues from you. If you seem upset or tearful, your dog is going to think there is a reason to be fearful and anxious. Put your pup’s mind at ease with a cheerful pat on the head, and walk away, secure in the knowledge that your dog is in the best possible hands.
