National Dog Week: Celebrate Your Canine Companion

September 26, 2025

The last full week of September is National Dog Week. Captain William Judy, who published “Dog World Magazine” and authored two books about dogs under the pen name Weimer Port, introduced the holiday week nearly a century ago in 1928. Today, this week helps us celebrate our dogs and our bond with them. Check out this list of fun activities to help you get started.

1. Self-Care Sunday

Spa days can be restful and rejuvenating, and they can be a great way to bond with your pup, too. Kick off National Dog Week with self-care for your dog that includes a luxuriously soothing doggy shampoo. Brush away the stress and mats before washing. After the scrub, clip their nails, clean their ears, brush their teeth, and apply a moisturizing paw balm to keep those pads fresh.

2. Movie Monday

Most dogs love cuddling up on the couch with their favorite person. Make it a movie night with a dog-friendly feature film and some yummy dog-friendly snacks. Look for movies with canine main characters, animated dogs, or even programs designed specifically for pups.

3. Treat Yourself Tuesday

Is your dog highly food motivated? They’re not alone! Many dogs are guided by their tummies, which makes “Treat Yourself Tuesday” especially popular. Start by mixing up a bowl of pup-friendly dog treats. Your trusty canine companion can taste test now and later throughout the week to decide favorites.

Some great options include:

4. Wiggly Wednesday

Regular exercise keeps your dog mentally and physically fit. On Wiggly Wednesday, plan some activities with your dog to keep them active and build your bond. Consider:

  • Flirt poles
  • Obstacle courses
  • Hiking
  • Dog-friendly outings
  • Pet-friendly patios
  • Training sessions
  • Puzzle toys

5. Thoughtful Thursday

This week is a great time to consider helping dogs that don’t yet have their forever homes. Visit your local shelter to offer a helping hand. Shelters often welcome donations of new or gently used blankets, new pet food, newspaper and litter, pet-safe cleaning supplies, and toys. Monetary donations are also generally appreciated, but call and ask what your local shelter needs. Most shelters also welcome volunteers who can help walk, play with or otherwise socialize lonely pets.

6. Fun Friday

Rare is the dog that doesn’t get excited over a new toy. Whether your pup enjoys puzzle toys, squeaky toys, or tennis balls, there’s sure to be excitement when you unveil a brand-new toy on Fun Friday to celebrate your pup. Wrap it up in dog-safe paper so your pup can have the fun of ripping it open, or unveil the gift after enjoying some leftover homemade treats. However you present the new present, your furry friend is sure to be a fan.

7. Social Saturday

Dogs are social animals, and they love spending time with their pack mates. Plan a puppy playdate for Saturday so your dog can get some quality time with the people and pups they enjoy the most, and add some of their favorite foods and activities into the mix to make things really special.

Playful Pack keeps things interesting all week long with a fun mix of activities that includes bacon-scented bubbles, disco dance parties, and pack-uccinos.
